The week before I went to San Diego I saw two great perfomances at Symphony Hall here in Chicago. First, I went with my friend Karen to listen to Yo Yo Ma play Bach and he was truly amazing. The house was packed and we were way up in the "cheap" seats, but the sound was so great - it was like we were right there next to him. I'm glad we had the opportunity to see him play solo rather than with the whole symphony - it was quite dramatic. Later in the week I went with Kate's step-father Ted to hear the CSO and they were also marvelous, playing Verdi, St. Soens, and Strauss, again to a packed house. We had much better seats for this show and were treated to a lecture about Strauss before the event in which I learned just how gendered classical music can be!

Wow Susan, how lucky you are! The cello is such a beautiful instrument and Yo Yo Ma is a master (does he cap his name?)
On another note -- sorry about the Cubs loss yesterday. Still, it was only March and if they start out strong and fizzle that's heartbreaking. Maybe they'll get off to a slow start and then bring it on after the all-star game. Plus you get another chance to face Eric Gagne. Now that he can't juice anymore he'll be worse than ever -- that's a boon to all the other teams in the National League. Go Cubs!

It was a tough game -- no score all the way until the 9th, their new closer comes in and gives up 3 runs, their new star outfielder ties the game in the bottom of the ninth with a 3 run homer and they still lose! Very tough. But it's a long season. I have tickets for several games this year. The first one is on April 18. I hope it warms up by then!
